On April 26, 2024, China's President Xi Jinping will meet US Secretary of State Antony Blinken at Beijing's Great Hall of the People.

China's President Xi Jinping informed visiting U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Friday that improving bilateral relations between Washington and Beijing would require Washington to view China's development "in a positive light."

According to an official release, Xi described this as a "fundamental issue" that "must be put right, in order for the China-U.S. relationship to truly stabilize, improve, and move forward."

The remarks made by the Chinese leader coincide with the United States placing limitations on Beijing's access to high-end technology and getting near to outlawing the social media app TikTok if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, doesn't sell it.

In the midst of tense relations between the two nations as they compete for technological superiority and have differing opinions on the situation in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, Blinken met with Xi on Friday in Beijing.

Prior to his private meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Blinken stressed the need of the United States and China avoiding "miscalculations" and stated that "face-to-face diplomacy" cannot be replaced.

"That we're as clear as possible about the areas where we have differences, at the very least to avoid misunderstandings, to avoid miscalculations," he told reporters, emphasizing that both parties must take care.

Wang informed Blinken that with more communication and collaboration, U.S.-China ties are "beginning to stabilize."

"The international community and both of our peoples welcome this," he stated, but he also issued a warning that "negative factors" are intensifying and rising, which is producing "all kinds of disruptions."

He warned Washington "not to step on China's red lines," saying, "China's legitimate development rights have been unreasonably suppressed and our core interests are facing challenges."

On the fringes of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting last year in San Francisco, President Joe Biden met with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

According to a White House transcript of the discussion, Biden brought up a number of US concerns during a phone conversation with Xi in early April. This was the first phone conversation between the two since July 2022.

tense relationships

From the trade battle to the backlash over China's purported surveillance balloon above American skies, tensions have been building for years. China has been charged by the US with supporting Russia's military operation in Ukraine more recently.

Prior to Blinken's arrival, a high-ranking State Department official disclosed that the United States' foremost envoy would caution Beijing against endorsing Russia's endeavors to reconstruct its defense infrastructure, as this could jeopardize the security of Europe.

According to the U.S. State Department, Blinken "raised concerns about trade policies and non-market economic practices" during his meeting with Shanghai's Communist Party Secretary Chen Jining on Thursday.
Spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized in a statement that "the United States seeks a healthy economic competition" with China and equitable playing fields for American workers and businesses doing business there.

Following a critical diplomatic mission to ease tensions between the United States and China in June of last year, Blinken made his second journey to China.

He stated on Friday that it's critical to show that "we're managing responsibly the most consequential relationship."

"I hope we can move forward on the issues that our presidents agreed we should work together on, but we also need to be very clear about our intentions and differences with one another."
